The Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch, which the company teased at its most recent event, is coming into focus. Samsung finally released a passel of product details, including the surprise that there will actually be two flavors of the device: the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic.
"Classic" is not a reference to previous models. Instead, it means the smartwatch will appeal to those who prefer more traditional watch design, while the Gear S2 (pictured above) will appeal to those looking for something a little sleeker. The Gear S2 will be a 42mm device (also the size of the larger Apple Watch), and the Classic will be 39mm, just a millimeter larger than Apple's 38mm Apple Watch.
However, we now also know that, at 11.4mm thick, even the pure Gear S2 model will be slightly thicker than the Apple Watch (11.5mm). It will also differ in other, more positive ways. According to Samsung, The Gear S2 will feature a 1.2-inch circular screen with 360 x 360 pixel (320 ppi) resolution. The Apple Watch, by contrast, tops out at 390 x 312 and 302 ppi (for the 42mm model).
Samsung is also promising an impressive two to three days of battery life. Apple promises 18 hours for the Apple Watch, though I have seen in excess of 24 hours.
That better battery life may be attributable to Samsung’s choice of wearable operating system. Even though the Gear line originally launched on Android Wear, Samsung has been preferring its own Tizen to the Google wearable OS for a while now.
Samsung’s Gear S2 will also feature a somewhat unusual navigation system that combines a pair of physical buttons (Home and Back) with a rotatable bezel.
Wireless technology abounds: In addition to Bluetooth, the wearable packs Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) as well as NFC. With NFC, it will, according to Samsung, function as a standalone mobile payment devices, just like the Apple Watch. But Samsung is taking the phone-free functionality a step further, including an “e-SIM” so you can make and take calls directly from the watch, whether or not the phone is present. That 3G-enabled model will be slightly thicker than the Gear S2 and Gear S2, both of which have virtually the same specifications.
Other specs include a dual-core 1GHz processor, 4GB of storage and wireless charging.
As with the Apple watch, Gear S2 owners will be able to check email, send and receive texts and track physical activity. It’ll also be dust and water-resistant.
The edgier Samsung Gear S2 will come in dark gray with a matching gray band or silver with a white band. The Classic will come in black with a leather band. No word yet on price.
We'll have a full hands-on report from IFA in Berlin in the coming days.
